A Mark on Milo

story

Your prayers and gifts are making the unseen, seen! Let me tell you about a once unseen kid.

Tim remembers when he first met Milo. He looked like he had been punched in the face. “My first question to this kid was, ‘Dude, did someone punch you in the eye?’”

“That’s a birthmark.” Milo told him.

What a way to start a relationship! For a long time afterward, Tim felt like there was no way he was going to connect with this young man.

According to the Ministry Site Director, Milo had been coming to Club for a long time. But when Tim started volunteering, he could see that no leader had really connected with Milo. Part of that might have been Milo’s method for attempting to belong.

“Milo is always trying to be funny,” Tim explained. “About 75% of the jokes land. But 25% are just kind of annoying to the upperclassmen around him.” Milo was kind of “that energetic little brother that gets dumped on.”

You make young people like Milo feel that they are seen and like they belong.

But Tim has been working to build a relationship with Milo, using humor and kind-hearted teasing to let him know he is seen and accepted.

Now when Milo comes to Campus Life Military Club, he always makes his way across the room to find Tim. It’s almost like he’s saying, “You saw me. Now I see you.”

Recently, Milo surprised Tim by ending his weekly hello ritual with a hug.

Their relationship may have started awkwardly, but it’s clear Tim’s efforts are leaving a mark. Once unseen and on the outside, Milo is being seen, accepted, and invited toward Jesus.

Friend, you are a part of that.
